National Patios is a proud supporter of
Operation Cleft - the Rotary Club
of Mitchell-Gungahlin’s initiative to change
the lives of six young people in Bangladesh.
• Today, thousands of
young children in developing countries have untreated
cleft palates and lips just because they were born
poor. • Operation Cleft
is a Rotary project working in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Laos, India and Vietnam to provide operations to
repair cleft lips and palates, enabling young children
to be better accepted into their communities by
improving their speech and hearing, and allowing
them to have a better education and life prospects.

• The Rotary Club of Mitchell-Gungahlin has provided
the funds for twenty operations this year. Now, National
Patios, Forde Community and
Café Dalmo have provided the funding
to enable another six children to have this life changing
procedure. • In presenting certificates
of recognition to Peter Carroll from National
Patios , Laura Attuel and Dion Warnock from Forde
Community and Steve Ujdur from Café
Dalmo, Rotary President Rowley Tompsett said,
“In Australia we simply do not realise the devastating
effect a cleft lip or palate can have on children in a
developing country. These children face rejection and
ridicule, even as they develop into young adults; they
have poor educational prospects and face an uncertain
future … all this for the want of $150.”
• Under the Operation Cleft
program, operations are performed by qualified surgeons
in each country, keeping the costs low. “All
of the administration costs are met by Rotary and a private
foundation.” Mr Tompsett said, “This means
that every dollar donated is used to provide the operations
needed to give these children a second chance at life.
We are very grateful to Forde Community,
Café Dalmo and National
Patios for their magnificent support. Their contribution
will give another six children the gift of a smile for
life. Never could we get better value for our $150”.
